Born
in Newcastle, Alison began playing the oboe at the age
of 12 and in 1990 was awarded a place at Chetham's School
of music, Manchester. She studied there for two years
before moving to London to study at the Guildhall School
of Music and Drama with Nicholas Daniel and Helen Gaunt.
In the Summer of 1994 Alison attended the Pacific Music
Festival held in Japan. And was a semi-finalist for Radio
2 Young Musician of the Year in 1995.
The following year Alison was awarded a B.Mus (hons) 1st
class degree by the Guildhall and was appointed Assistant
Principal Oboe and Cor Anglais with the Hong Kong Philharmonic
Orchestra. During her six years in Hong Kong she performed
numerous solo and chamber music recitals for music societies
and recordings for RTHK radio 3.
In
2001 Alison won first Prize in the prestigious Isle
of Wight Oboe
Competition which led to her London debut recital in
the Purcell Room. In 2002 Alison returned to England
and was appointed Principal Cor Anglais with the BBC
National Orchestra of Wales with whom she recently performed
Quiet City, Copland, with Alison Balsom. She also enjoys
an active free-lance career playing with other orchestras
throughout the UK playing both Principal Oboe and Cor
Anglais. |
